Sulaiman Mufty Yassin Jalloh

Sheikh

Sulaiman Yassin Jalloh (Sheikh), popularly called Sheikh Mufty Yassin is a Sierra Leonean American Islamic scholar, teacher, and preacher. He is also a practicing registered nurse in Ohio, USA, where he resides, currently.

Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in 1978, Sheikh Mufty Yassin started his Islamic education at the age of 3 with his dad, Mohamed Yassin Jalloh (late), teaching and mentoring him. At age 5, his dad handed him over to the then-popular and widely respected Sheikh Muhammad Ali Mujtabah of Freetown, who had just returned to the country after more than a decade of advanced Islamic studies in Pakistan.

At the age of 7, the young Yassin Jalloh started preaching Islam and leading congregations in prayers at different Masjids.

His public preaching journey started when Sheikh Muhammad Mujtabah asked him to give a talk on Lailatul Kadr, a practice he enjoyed doing. That got him motivated. Since then, he would continue to preach on different topics in Islam.

By the age of nine, the young preacher started tutoring young children and adults the basics of the Arabic alphabet.

He was regarded as the nation’s youngest imam. He also nicknamed The Child Sheikh, given his knowledge of the Qur’an and his performing of leading roles at state functions and leading Jummah prayers on Fridays throughout the country at such early age.

Sulaiman Yassin Jalloh completed the tafsir – reading and memorizing the Holy Qur’an – (15 Juzz) at the age of 11. By aged 15, he would memorize over 150 Hadiths.

Sheikh Mufty Yassin also studied under other local Islamic scholars in Sierra Leone before traveling to Egypt to further his education following the assassination of his mentor, Sheikh Muhammad Mujtabah, an experience that gutted him.

Before leaving Sierra Leone, he taught Islamic studies in a couple of middle and high schools in the city. He also opened a Masjid on the east of Freetown following the death of Sheikh Muhammad Mujtabah. He was the chief imam.

A widely traveled man, Sheikh Mufty Yassin has been to countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia. He is also fluent in a couple of languages. He is currently the chief Imam of Jami Ul Jalil in Columbus, Ohio.

Sheikh Mufty Yassin Jalloh has received awards and prizes from Quranic competitions at home and abroad. He is married with three children.
